Warning Signs to Know Before a Residential Roofing Disaster

Your roof is quite literally the most important fragment of your home and it’s certainly vital to keep an eye on it with regular maintenance checks. It is difficult for homeowners to identify the signs that lead to residential roofing disasters. Danforth Roofing Supply has crafted this blog to let you know the signs that you have to be careful about. We have been providing various roofing products and services to clients in the greater Toronto area for more than 70 years. We can help you find everything required to complete your roofing projects, whether it’s residential or commercial. Let’s look at the signs that you should watch out for to know when you should consider new residential roofing.

  • Age of your roof

A typical roof will last between 20 to 25 years. This also depends on whether the old roof was completely removed and also on the number of shingles present. If the roof was installed over several layers or just a single layer that is more than 20 years old, you need a new roof.

  • Your shingles are buckling and curling

Shingles that are buckling or curling are one major sign that you have to replace your roof. Check your homes’ slopes that receive direct sunlight. If your shingles are losing granules, they are past their life expectancy. There are also chances that the roof is defective.

  • Roof valleys

Valleys are the curves in your roof where shingles meet in corners to direct rainwater and snow to the gutters. If the valleys are damaged, you will quickly face a leaky roof situation, which will cost you dearly.

  • Chimney flashing

This is another area that you have to be careful about. If your flashing consists of tar or roof cement, it may need replacement with a tight-fitting, metal flashing system.

  • Shingle granules in the gutters

Inspect your gutters for shingle granules. Roofs lose more granules when they reach the end of their life cycle. An inconsistent or darker colour pattern on certain parts of the roof is another sign that the granules have worn away from your roof.

  • Missing shingles

Missing or damaged shingles are also a dangerous sign. This can be caused by systematic problems, such as poor ventilation, or events such as fallen tree branches or hail.

  • Daylight through the roof boards

Inspect for a spongy feel when walking on the roof; if present, it means the underlying decking is affected by moisture. Also, see for moisture in the insulation.
